The author of this monograph was one of our stalwarts in the domain of Anthropology. It was at our request that he delivered a course of lectures under the auspices of the Sanskrit College Seminar. His lectures, I am glad to observe, evoked much enthusiasm and interest even among scholars trained in the traditional method in our country. It is a pity that the author could not live to see it through the press in its final stage. But I must record my satisfaction that his younger son Dr Gouranga Chattopadhyay rendered all possible assistance in the publication of the work of his illustrious father. We would have been happy had the author been alive today to feel for himself the response and reaction to his penetrating researches embodied in this volume which I have the pleasure now to present before the academic world.
