Salient points in the life of Vidyaratna Babaji

Vidyaratna Babaji (Swami Satyeswarananda Maharaj) was educated as a resident student for eight years in the hermitage school.
He learned Kirya from Swami Satyananda with whom he was closely associated for long twenty years.
Graduated from the University of Calcutta with a B. A. Philosophy honors, received an M.A. in philosophy specializing in Vedanta philosophy, concurrently received a LL.B.(Law) degree, and also worked for Ph.D. program.
He was a professor of law and an advocate (attorney).
He entered into the order of Swami with the blessings of Jagatguru Sankaracharya Swami Krishna Tirtha Bharati of Puri Gobardhan Math and Bidyananda Presided over the ceremony.
He lived in a small hut for twelve (12) years in Dunagiri Hill, Himalayas; sometimes with Mahamuni Babaji who frequently visited him.
Suddenly, without taking a vow, he observed Continuous Silence... (akhanda mouna) for three long years and was known as silent sage, Mouni Baba, Mouni Swami.
In 1974, he received "Kriya Sutra" the message of Mahamuni Babaji at Dunagiri Hill Himalayas.
In 1975, at the instruction of Babaji, he toured the world and lectured in European countries.
In 1976, Mahamuni Babaji initiated him into Purna Kriya in the Himalayas and commissioned him to re-establish the Original Kriya.
In 1982, Mahamuni Babaji sent Vidyaratna Babaji to America. He was lived in America ever since.
He has authored more than forty-five (45) books. Some of them are as follows:
1. Babaji and His Legacy,
2. The Divine incarnation
3. Biography of a Yogi, volume 1
4. Kriya: Finding the true path,
5. The six systems (Sara Darsan), and
6. The Holy Bible: In the light of Kriya.

As a sannyasi, he lives and stays alone; and eats meals prepared by himself (swapak). Like Mahamuni Babaji and Lahiri Mahasay, he is free of asrams, centers and organizations. As a servant of all (sakaler das) he serves only the qualified, since and serious seekers of truth form San Diego, California (U.S.A)



Discourse on Kriya Pranayam- The science of breath:
It would be most appropriate to discuss the Atma Kriya, the Science of Breath, at the outset of this book as all the scriptures aim to attain eternal realization of the only one Atma/atman, the absolute self, which alone can provide eternal peace, harmony, and bliss to the seeking self [sadhak]. (p) Thus it becomes imperative to have the discourse of the discipline, called Atma Kriya, or Kriya Pranayam.

It will help the reader to make the foundation to be able to see in all the scriptures of the major religions of the world have the universal ground of commonality, that is, breath.

If the Breath is abandoned from the practice or prayer, the individual's endeavor for spirituality becomes lifeless, dead; in other words, bears no fruits.

Kriyas are the keys to eternal Realization of the Atma, the Absolute self

The path is called Kriya when one tries to turn oneself inward and dissolve the mind, intellect and ego, following the "Breath." It is a scientific path intended for all people that is based on a universal activity, namely, "Breath."

Nirasirjata Chittatma Takta sarba parigraha.
Sarirang Kebalang karma kurbannapnoti kilwisam. Gita 4:21
The verse says, "If by abandoning the expectation for results while holding onto the inner self, Kutastha, without being outward, the seeker practices Kebala Kriya in the physical body, he will be purified of all sins." Commentary by Lahiri Mahasay.

Purusartha Sunyanang Gunanamprati Prasaba Kaibalang.
Swarupa pratistha Ba Chiti Shakti riti. Yoga sutras 4:34
"By the transcendence of attachment, egoism and manifestation of the reverse order of qualities, being established in consciousness, i.e., remaining only in the state called Kaibakya (when the heart is made tranquil by the practice of Kebala Kriya), and by the transcendence of qualities, the inner self automatically establishes himself in oneness with the ultimate self. This is the state of Kaibalya." Commentary by Lahiri Mahasay.

The word Kebala means "easy," "natural" and "spontaneous." When the seeker attains the state of spontaneous oneness-consciousness by practicing the kebala Kriya, his efforts drop off, and he attains the spontaneous state of consciousness, which is the pure being, or ultimate self.

To a skeptic, "God" and "Self" are mere words. To him, the word "God" cannot represent ultimate consciousness, but the word "self" can, and the cannot deny his own existence.

So, "Self," as "I," stands best suited to represent eternal existence to both skeptic and believe, as self cannot be denied by anyone. The self is the eternal existence, and it is absolutely one, indivisible in character, being pure consciousness.

In fact, the same ultimate existence appears to the ignorant as three: Self, God and Universe, as long as the ego lasts, but when a person dissolves this, he realizes that nothing exists but the all-inclusive self, and the three appear as one self.

So, we prefer "ultimate self" to represent ultimate existence.

The Self is the Truth, absolutely one, and Its religion is absolutely one. As self is eternal, Its realization is eternal. To realize the self, which is pure consciousness, the seeker must meditate through the true path which will lead to eternal realization on the universal, or absolute, ground.

From relative existences, relative realizations are gained. So, when the seekers are meditating on something outside themselves, they are attaining relative realizations cannot be absolute realization.

So, to know everything else except the "Knower' is ignorance.

The true path of meditation is to realize the knower (self) within, knowing both subject and object to be one existence: absolute ground.

To find absolute realization, the seeker must meditate on the self, which leads him to absolute realization, and this is the truly scientific way of meditation for achieving eternal realization, or eternal peace. Eternal realization of the self places the seeker in a harmonious position when he realizes that self, God and universe are just one.

Self is eternal existence, without beginning or end, so it is never born. When a person is born, respiration, or breathing, is also born. This breathing, or respiration, is universal to mankind. Breathing holds and represents the indi-vidual life force.

So, to realize the character of the eternal nature of life is to realize "the poised (Equilibrium) state of breathing." Breathing, or respiration, is the true and scientific means by which all mankind can find the true path for attaining true religion: inner realization of the self.

When a person is breathing, creation (illusion) begins for him. The entire manifestation of this universe depends on his breathing. Ordinarily, when breathing stops, the person dies, and the entire manifestation disappears for him. The creation and dissolution of manifestation depend respectively on inhaling and exhaling.

When a person, by practicing the scientific ways of Kebala Kriya based on breathing, naturally attains the equilibrium, or poised state of breathing, then he becomes free from illusions, beyond the state of creation and dissolution, and embraces eternity: everlasting life.

At that time, he is beyond the world of sensation; his intellect, ego and thoughts are poised in inner wisdom, and he attains eternal tranquility, eternal peace. In the poised state of breathing, mind, ego and thought are dissolved. This is the way to adopt a balanced way of lifestyle in modern society.

Breathing, being the universal ground, is the air route/root to attain inner realization. When the seeker meditates within with the help of Breath, he is using the truly scientific way of meditation.

Breathing, as the life force inside the seeker's body, operates in a harmonious Rhythm (Chhanda) for continuing the manifestation/illusion/creation. The seeker's immediate aim is to find the equilibrium, or poised, state of breathing, which tranquilizes sensation and the intellect to achieve the inner wisdom of the self, or eternal realization.

The truth, or the self, being pure consciousness, is beyond the world of sensation, concepts, thoughts and intellect. Scientific meditation consists of some Kriyas for achieving eternal tranquility, or the equilibrium state of consciousness.

Some Kriyas deal with transcending the world of sensation to reach beyond sensual awareness, and other Kriyas help to dissolve the mind, i.e., the world of concept, thought and intellect.

We live in our sense worked so deeply that it is difficult to change the mind's habit of being attached to the senses. If we are to change a habit, we cannot change it all of a sudden; doing so would be impractical and unscientific. Change can best be accomplished gradually after determined applications of the Kriyas. We must apply certain definite kriya so that the mind will dissolve attachments to the sense world and attain pure bliss. We must, then, follow a scientific psychological method and provide more attractive alternatives to the five senses.

Sense organs: 1. Nose 2. Tongue 3. Eye 4. Skin 5. Ear

Corresponding functions: 1. Smelling 2. Tasting 3. Seeing 4. Touching 5. Hearing

Even though the application of scientific Kriyas are apparently material, or gross, nevertheless they gradually purify the mind from being attached to the sense world and start to make inward different states of awareness through the senses (the mind) for reception of pure consciousness through Christ-consciousness.

Now, we will examine the positive scientific Kriyas which are used to provide divine attraction respectively to our five senses.

Requirement in Kriya Initiation

Babaji's Instructions for Kriya Initiation

1. The person must be honest and not a liar.
2. The person should read the Bhagavad Gita every day.
3. He must offer everything, whatever he has, to his Gurudev including his wife.
Lahiri Mahasay's Instructions for Kriya Initiation

1. The person should not smoke of drink.
2. The person should read some portion to the Bhagavad Gita every day.
3. He should treat all women as his mother, except his wife, and she should treat all men as her father, expect her husband.
4. The person should loss self-importance to destroy his or her ego.
5. The person should sit a little lower than his or her Gurudev's, or Master's seat and offer everything to him.
6. The person should practice Kriyas every day in strict accordance with the instructions personally received from his or her Gurudev.
