Book Description
Introduction

What would life be without dreams? It would be dull and colourless, for sure. Dreams make an interesting subject-mysterious, exciting and esoteric. Reams and reams have been written on dreams and their interpretation, experts have opined in diverse manners on the subject of dream analysis, yet human beings continue to find new and exciting ways to solve this enigma and find meanings to their reverie. Dreams have fascinated the human mind for centuries and will continue to do so for many more. Ever since 5000 BC we have been delving into the world of sleep and trying to find answers or give meanings to the extraordinary visions that appear there.

Some people earn their living selling dreams-through movies, some through predicting the meaning of dreams and yet others by writing volumes on dream analysis, but the fact remains tat this mysterious subject has a large enough interest element to arouse curiosity in every heart. Apart from being a very saleable substance, dreams have an enduring air of enigma and mysticism around them, which make them all the more alluring. Dreams have had a long list of practical benefits apart from hypothetical ones. The creative aspects of dreams are fascinating. Numerous music compositions, discoveries and ideas have been generated through them. Many important historical events have been forecast through dreams. They are also a method of psychological healing and often act as an outlet for repressed thoughts.

"Dreams are the touchstones of our character," said Henry David Thoreau and he was not far from the truth.

We all dream. Every night-as the light of consciousness is dimmed-we enter the realm of dreams. In this dream state, our imagination has a free run, with little or no interference from our conscious mind. In our dreams, we are capable of undertaking heroic acts, attaining fame and wealth and performing stupendous deeds that we cannot do in our waking hours. Dreams are our escape mechanism, they allow us to air our hidden feelings and desires, and they are our vents for frustrating circumstances in life. Just imagine how colourless our lives would be without the psychedelic carnival of dreams. Dreams are an intense experience for most of us. While some of us revel in them during nights, others immerse themselves in daytime reverie but no one would disagree that they are an interesting facet of life.

To dream is natural-it is a universal experience. People of all cultures enter into the dream state when they sleep. Sleep research has shown that even animals dream. How we regard the dream, however, varies from culture to culture and from person to person. Unfortunately, most of us remain blissfully unaware of our dreams-we fail to remember them. Even if we do remember a dream, it is typically dismissed as meaningless and unimportant. For those of us who do place an importance on dreams, it still remains a mystery.
So, what is a dream?

Sigmund Freud, the master psychoanalyst, has called dreams "The royal road to the unconscious". New researches on the subject indicate that dreams play a vital role in our lives. We now know that exploring dreams can be positively helpful and rewarding. Most psychologists believe that a person's dreams can reveal the things that preoccupy his mind deep down, even if they are not recognised immediately. It is amazing how much one can learn about oneself and others, if one can read dreams and understand them.

Dreams have been a mystery to us since Adam first breathed life. The stuff of legends, myths and fairy tales, dreams have always attracted attention. We can learn much from our dreams, if only we listen with a trained ear. There is nothing psychic about understanding dreams. However, one needs a certain degree of intuition, coupled with logic and a working knowledge of dreaming to analyse and interpret them.

Most people dismiss their dreams as some kind of sleep induced joke. It is a conversation starter and a source of much amusement. Most of us discuss our dreams with our family and friends, albeit jokingly. We may say-"I had the funniest dream last night." With this statement begins an interesting story to be enjoyed by everyone' the story is usually a jumble of strange ideas, perhaps involving some common characters, set in unidentifiable circumstances. The normal reaction is to laugh at the strangeness of the events-and then forget about it. Even as we laugh away the dreams, we retain a certain curiosity about the subject of the dream and want to learn more about it. It is one of those inexplicable mysteries that holds a universal element of interest and inquisitiveness. For a minute, think of the consequences that would follow if you were to spend more time and energy in disentangling the dream and finding its meaning. Perhaps you could discover the unknown side of your personality or know about your inner feelings and conscious, you could also delve into the psyche of your friend. The ramification are endless.

Have you ever wondered why it is that most people seem interested in sharing their dreams with someone? It is almost as though there is a natural desire to go over the experience, to ruminate over it and relive it for a while, wondering about the hidden meanings conveyed by it. Somehow, we always feel that dream interpretation is beyond us, that we need experts to do the job. Like doctors who handle our ailments, experts would attach meanings to our dreams. Nothing can be farther from truth; one does not necessarily have to be a psychoanalyst or dream expert to interpret the meanings of dreams. Anyone can do it, provided he has the time and inclination and is willing to work on the subject. Dream analysis is an interesting facet of life with wonderfully satisfying feelings associated with it. With a little knowledge and experience you will be able to learn some valuable things about yourself and your friends-about character, aims, ambitions, and the problems that are bothering your unconscious. You might even find a solution to a dilemma, which has been worrying you for days.

The most important things to realize is that dreams are not disorganized nonsense. Your brain is not playing a joke by scrambling up thoughts and turning everything upside down for a few hours while the body relaxes. Dreams are not some frightening glimpse into the 'dark world' of the mind, although some people may believe it to be so. There is nothing abnormal or unnatural about dwelling on your dreams, though supernatural characteristics are thought to be associated with it. No matter how humdrum or routine you feel your life to be, if you delve into your dreams you will find a whole new imaginative landscape that would be hard to think up during your waking hours.

Here is the background you will need to understand the importance of sleep and dreams and how to extract the information from a puzzling jumbled of dream pictures. Past ideas and future possibilities are all included, and there is a dossier of genuine dreams from all kinds of people for you to compare and contrast with your own personal dreamscape.

When analysing dreams, it is important to try and determine what has instigated the dream. Dreams can result from a variety of factors. For Instance, in some circumstances eating something difficult to digest before bed can cause dreams to be revealed as meaningless images. A bout of flu can cause dreams to become fragmented visions caused from a sick body trying to heal itself. Although these pictures mean nothing to us logically, there is likely to be some pattern that is applicable to the body. In still other instances, dreams can reveal emotional struggles.

Although dreams can result from a variety of different factors, more often than not, the dreams we recall can be understood. We can recreate the story line, which we can later write down and analyse. These dreams can give us great insights into what we are dealing with in our lives at a particular moment in time.

They can depict both minor and major emotional struggles. They can also depict problems you have within yourself. These depictions can be some of the most profound life-changing messages you will ever receive.

Our higher self can create images in our dreams in an instant. It can embed symbols within our dreams, which can have profound meanings for us.

Dreams have also been described as prophetic or precognitive, actually depicting an event, which has not yet occurred in our time. Sceptics of prophecy have been shocked into belief when they themselves have suddenly experienced a personal precognitive dream.

These types of dreams can occur to warn of an impending illness or accidents. Sometimes they occur to prepare people for an inevitable death about to occur in the family.

A therapist can look at your life and see from the outside what appears to be the problem, but only you can see yourself from the inside, having full knowledge of your personal history and all of your secrets. No therapist can help you if you leave out what could be the most important information of all when trying to deal with a symptom you may be experiencing. You are the only one who knows the full story.

Dreams can be many things for us. They are a gift from the universe. We can go through life ignoring them. Or we can use them, pay attention to the, take advantage of them and learn from them. The answers are there for us; all we have to do is look.
