Book Description

About the Book :

Recent renewal of interest in the notions of goodness, character and virtue as central to ethical theory, is perhaps the most important development in moral philosophy. The virtue ethicists have, however, failed to answer convincingly questions concerning both the ratio and the ordinatio of virtues. Why are certain qualities of character virtues? How are the virtues grounded? What is a good life> And why should man aim at the good? For answer to such questions the author looks up to the Indian spiritual tradition. It has been argued that a secular quest of the ultimate truth - so characteristic of Indian spirituality - is atonce a movement towards the good of human life. And a sincere commitment to the 'quest naturally involves the moral agent to embrace the inclusive virtue of 'selflessness'.

This book will be immensely useful to all those interested in current concerns of post-modern ethics, as well as to those who wish to understand the essential character and the moral significance of the spiritual life.
