Bharati Mukherjee and Chitra Banerjee are most prominent writers of Indian English Diaspora. Both the women are Indian American Writers. There writing styles are very much similar to each others. The two have same roots and share a common experience and feelings. In their novels they highlight the present society, family structure and relationship between family members, culture, tradition and values in human life, their beliefs, principles, and behaviour. In modern society, there are many changes which have been taking place at different level and people face lots of problems and challenges, they prepare themselves to fight against these challenges.
Dr. Maitry Mohan Bain is a 'Guest Assistant Professor' in Higher Education Madhya Pradesh. She has a bright academic profile as she did her graduation in English, Hindi, Music and Post-graduation in English literature from Doctor Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. She born from a highly intellectual mother (Prof. Chanda Bain) on 12th July 1994 and grew up in university premises. The Sanchi University of Buddhist-Indic Studies (Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh) has awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) to her on the thesis entitled "Indian Ethos in the Novels of Bharati Mukherjee and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni". She has good number of publications as well as she has presented papers in national and international conferences. She is a rising authority on Indian Ethos, Indian Culture and feminism.
The Indian culture and traditions are something that has now become famous all over the world. Indian people consider the customs and traditions of India to be very diverse and unique. There are number of festivals celebrated in India, mainly due to the practice of diverse religions and groups. India is a land of multi religious country like Hindu. Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism and Jainism. These are some religions of India and every religion has its traditional rules, restrictions, festivals and mythological beliefs.
In Hindu culture, the people considered animal and tree as god and goddess. In Hindu religion people worship animals like Cow, Snake, Lion, Elephant, Peacock and trees like Banyan tree, Tulsishami, Peepal tree. These all are Indian traditional beliefs which Bharati Mukherjee and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni portray in their works. Their characters are dealing with new challenges in their life and most of her characters are belonging typical Indian families. But the challenge and struggle starts after shifting in foreign land. There they feel alienation and in that situation they start living in dilemma, because they are Indians and there they missing their culture which they know very well and accepting the new culture is difficult for them.
Both the writers are diasporic writers so basically their works are based on diasporic conditions. Bharati Mukherjee's novels depict the diasporic characteristic through her characters. Most of her characters are shifted to America, for better opportunity and better life style. But in foreign land they find that life is so difficult and challenging, because these immigrants are not the part of their society. In that situation they are suffering from disturbed psyche, nostalgia, homesickness and isolation. The reason is host country does not accept other country people in their land and it's become more difficult to adopt foreign culture for immigrant people.
The Indian diaspora is an older diaspora that began in the mid-nineteenth century and continued until the end of British policies. The old diaspora is largely a phenomenon prior to World War II. In the mid 1960s, there are many individuals moved in search of better opportunities for exchange and training in the US, Canada, UK, Western Europe and Australia under the classification of the New Indian Diaspora. The Indian diaspora has figured out how to create unmistakable characters and their life styles wherever they have settled and take India with them. They are shifted to foreign land with their tradition, cultural myths, legends, the structure of norms and qualities that govern family, socio cultural material full of pre-defined social personalities, religious beliefs and practices, and occupational tendencies. In fact, they do not like to be totally cut off from their homeland.
The Indian diasporic community is the result of different waves of migration over hundreds of years for various reasons like slavery under commercialism, indentured labour under colonialism and guest work programs after colonialism. This international engagement of people riding on the process of globalization is strengthened through global networks of friends, families, and businesses that are symbiotic and that. enable the exchange of shared social and economic and ideas of cultural interests. The word diaspora has natural connection with migration, but it cannot be replaced with it as it is accompanied by feelings of love, nostalgia, homesickness and alienation for the motherland. Whether it forced diaspora or will full diaspora, in both cases there is an attachment towards motherland and self identity. However, after starting a new life in the adopted homeland, most of migrants are not return to their homeland.
