The Indian Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies at Anjaneri near Nasik, founded and endowed by Shri K.K. Maheshwari, planned in conjunction with Dr. Parmeshwari Lal Gupta, who became its first Director, has rapidly established a world-wide reputation among all scholars working in the field of Indian Numismatics and History. Its rich collection of books on nu mismatch and related subjects based on Dr. Gupta's personal library, its photographic archives of coins from Indian and foreign collections and its facilities for study and research have made Nasik a key centre for research studies in numismatics. It was during a meeting at Nasik early in 1989 that some of Dr. Gupta's colleagues and friends learnt that Dr. Gupta would be celebrating the 75th anniversary of his birth in 1990. It was then considered that such a milestone in Dr. Gupta's life should not be allowed to pass unmarked. The present volume is the result. Working in the Institute at Nasik makes one realise that the Institute itself is the fitting and crowning glory of the scholar who has contributed so much to the study of Indian Numismatics, History, Art and Culture. Si Monumentum requioris, circumspice (If you seek his monument, just look around about you). This volume of essays presented by his colleagues, friends and admirers simply complements this, as a personal mark of esteem from us all. Dr. Parmeshwari Lal Gupta is a true son of India, who fought for her independence, made a successful career as a Hindi journalist and then with rugged determination and great personal sacrifice turned his great talents to the study of Indian Numismatics, History, Art and Culture. His life is a remarkable story of devotion-first to the cause of India's independence, and then to the study of India's culture through the meticulous study of Indian coinage. Dr. Gupta's own writings and extensive publications show the width and depth of his studies. With our own essays,Te, vir clarissime India, Salutamus. Most distinguished Son of India, We Salute you.
