Book Description
Preface

Kaumarabhritya in Ayurveda includes not only paediatrics but also treating lactating mothers to safe-guard the health of their children. A lot is mentioned in Ayurveda about embryology, genetics, neonatology and remaining field of paediatrics, but in sutra form. The treatment of rare cases is also recorded. Though it is one of the subjects of Ashtanga Ayurveda and needs to be considered as an important clinical subject, this subject was not given due place in the curriculum of CCIM. Due to this the young students think it as a rudimentary clinical subject in Ayurveda. This subject needs to be highlighted and explained in terms of modern science and in language that young scholars can understand.

This interactive training program in balarog (Ayurvedic pediatrics) is mainly aimed at solving the problems that an Ayurvedic balarog specialist faces while teaching the UG and PG students. Also another main objective is to help understand the PG students the complex subjects that are dealt in very insufficient volume, but carry much clinical importance, and are also of significant interest in research. Chapters in Ayurvedic classical texts are like texts of modern super specialty; however, there is a major difference between them. Such modern texts are very voluminous and provide elaborate details of one single symptom; thanks to tremendous advancement made in investigative and diagnostic techniques. On the other hand, Ayurvedic chapters appear as if they are summarized in very brief; sometimes appearing as oversimplification of specialized topics. Unless one has thorough knowledge of Sanskrit and related subjects of modern medical science one may find oneself lost in the ocean of the knowledge. Mastery in these fields and Sanskrit equips one with a tremendous efficiency to satisfactorily sail through this ocean of knowledge.

After about 10 years since a combined interactive workshop on strirog-prasutitantra and balarog was held, I have observed profound changes in the subject matter for which the solution is sought from the expert of balarog. Take the examples of Ayurvedic genetics, embryology and pumsavan karma. Now the younger generation with the basic knowledge of the related modern subjects seek in-depth solutions of their doubts. This trend is very heartening. Looking back in the past 10 years the changes in the attitude of the students and young teachers are perceptible and I am satisfied with the efforts they are putting to understand the subject and RAV's efforts are showing results.

In this training program the participants set the agenda i.e. the subject that would he discussed. They would also share their experiences and ideas. Subject matter has been divided in different chapters. Views and experiences of experts have been arranged in the book form. Images of the patients, CT, MRI etc have been incorporated at several places in the support of the views of the experts that have been given to explain Ayurvedic subject matter.

Over the period of decade since RAV started the interactive workshops I have realized that interactions among the participants and the experts help both the groups to gain; none to lose. This is very interesting aspect of this interactive learning.

I hope that the present training programme will facilitate due discussions and scientific understanding of the subject, and the readers will find the book useful.

I am indebted to the Secretary, Joint Secretaries and other officials of the Department of AYUSH and IFD, besides the President and other Members of Governing Body for their constant support and encouragement. I extend my gratitude to all resource persons for sparing their time and sharing their expertise and experience through the answers and attending this programme to explain to the participants. Further, I appreciate the enthusiasm shown by teachers, practitioners and PG students to participate in the training programme.

I sincerely appreciate all my staff in RAV for their painstaking efforts to accomplish the given tasks on time and for their continued support during my tenure in RAV. I thank Dr. Sandhya Patel for all the help in the preparation of this book.
