Book Description
Preface

Let me first answer the points raised by Richard Nolle while reviewing my book: Rahu & Ketu in Predictive Astrology in Horoscope Magazine, May 1980. His remarks: It is worth noting here that Jain departs from Hindu tradition by using Western aspects and also by addressing the modern planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto - which were undiscovered in ancient times and hence, were never incorporated into classical Indian astrology), etc.

1. ASPECTS: True, I have used the words - conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition for the convenience of the readers as this book was written for the International market. These aspects are very much available in all the ancient texts of Hindu Astrology, though I have named them differently. 3rd aspect (sextile), 4th/10th aspect (square), 5th/9th aspect (trine), 7th aspect (opposition), 6th/8th aspect (quincunx) etc. Amongst all the Oriental texts on Hindu Astrology, let Richard Nolle study Sripatipaddhati" alone and he will know the truth. 2. MODERN PLANETS (Uranus, Naptune, Pluto): To answer this, I will simply say that Nolle is totally ignorant about the Oriental Texts of Hindu Astrology. Let him pick-up any text:Parashara Hora, Jataka Parijata, Uttarakalamrita, Phaladeepika, Brihat Jataka and many others (some of them are available in English Translation also), he will find that 12 planets (including Rahu and Ketu) were named in all the ancient texts of Hindu Astrology. However, they were named differently and said to be the dark planets not visible to the naked eye. Their characteristics defined are similar to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The last sage of Hindu Astrology was Varahamihira (author of Brihat Jataka) and in his times, these planets were not discovered. Astrological books published in the West before 1930 do not carry the planet Pluto. Does that mean that they have no right to include it now? We have as much right to include these planets in our present day astrology was fully aware of these undiscovered planets in his times and mentioned them in his Text. It is a question of simply using the different names for the convenience of the modern world.

3. Revati asterism: (Sanskrit terms). It is not a Sanskrit term, but one of the proper names of Lunar Mansions (proper names but one of the proper names of Lunar Mansions (Proper names cannot be translated). Revati is the 27th Lunar Mansion. I have not used any Sanskrit name and wherever it was a must, it was translated into English. Nolle cannot blame me for the mistake or negligence of others. This small book, exclusively on Rahu/Ketu, cannot provide all the information on Hindu Astrology. Readers interested to know more about Revati asterism or the Lunar Mansions, will do good to study "Hindu Astrology" by Shil Ponde (available in English). Even otherwise, this book should be studied, as I have made the constant use of Lunar Mansions in this book.

4. Nolle's remark: "Everyone born between midnight and 2.00a.m. in July 1889, would have died on a Wednesday morning in 1963," is very interesting. It shows Nolle's complete ignorance about Indian Astrology. It would have been appreciated, if he would have said that he did not follow the text than to say something which is hopelessly wrong. For ready reference, I have provided the names of Lunar Mansions at the end of this book.

However, I am grateful to Nolle for his remarks: It poses an annoying problem for beginning students of Indian Astrology, because otherwise, I would have never known their difficulties. Let me first explain the basic principles of Hindu Astrology for the guidance of beginning students of Indian Astrology in the West.

1. Hindu Astrology is Sidereal but it is very much different from the Sidereal Astrology of Fagan in America. Ayanamsa tables are provided at the end of this book. If the reader will subtract the figure of Ayanamsa of his/her date of birth from the Tropical chart, it will become the Hindu Sidereal Chart. This figure of Ayanamsa is to be subtracted from the longitude of the ascendant and the planets.

2. We believe in Equal House Division, i.e. the reader are to pick-up the Ascendant only from the Table of Houses. Cusp of the house is the mid-point and not the beginning of the house as is generally done in the west. For example, Virgo is the ascendant, any planet in Virgo (within 15 degrees of the cusp on either side) will be in the ascendant, whether it is before the cusp or after the cusp.

3. There are no orb restrictions with the Hindu School for the aspects, but before the planet is in aspect, the sign will have to be in aspect. Planet in Libra will be in opposition to Aries planets even if the orb is 29 degree, but it will not be in opposition of Taurus planet, even if the orb is 1 degree.

4. We have the same aspects as the Western school but they are named differently. For Square aspect, either we will say the 4th aspect or the 10th aspect. The aspects are to be counted anticlockwise.

5. For progressions, we have a different school, known as Hindu Dasa System. Readers interested to know more, should study 'Hindu Dasa System' by Grace Inglis.

6. In this book, I have repeatedly used the combinations for the Span of Life. Readers interested to study more should read 'Span of Life' by G. Rama Murty.

7. Tropical (Western) School is restricted to solar Zodiac only, but in Hindu Astrology, Lunar Zodiac is equally important and is constantly used. The planets can be in one Solar Mansion but they can be in different Lunar Mansions. Similarly, planets in one Lunar Mansion can be in different Solar Mansions and it will make all the difference in Hindu Predictive Astrology.

My book-Rahu & Ketu in Predictive Astrology, was published in 1978 (the only complete book on the subject), wherein I have said that this work is capable of considerable extension and improvement. At that time, I thought that I would have been able to find out the missing link and weld it together, but soon after its publication, I found out that I am still far-off from the goal. Something was still missing somewhere. I was confronted with many problems to which I could not find ready answers. For example, take the chart of President Rajendra Prasad, and his horoscope straight away will not say that the native will become President of India. There were many more cases like this and I was placed in a very delicate situation.

I was back on my studies and this book is the outcome of my two years' research and hard labour. I have a mind to provide a minimum of 100 illustrations, if not more, to prove the validity of the observations I made and conclusions arrived at, but soon after I realized that it is a very difficult task to accomplish. I may not be able to complete the book at all. During these 18 months, I could not do more than 36 illustrations. To complete 100, it will take another two to three years and that will be too late for this book to appear. Under the circumstances, I decided to split this work into 3 volume and this is the first volume which I am presenting t the reader today. Other volumes will follow. In the meantime, I hope to get the comments and valuable suggestions from the readers which will help me to improve further on future writings.

Thought this is a small book, the readers will find it more valuable and useful than any other work published on Astrology so far. There are five complete books in this small book and every book is complete by itself. There are no generalizations and no general principles. Nothing is left to chance. This book contains 36 practical illustrations from notable charts published all over the world. In my delineations, I have dealt with the specific events with the specific astrological principles for those events.

1. Rectification: I have rectified all the 36 nativities and I have not taken a single case from my private files to enable the readers to verify and check them. Now it is for them either to accept or reject my observations and conclusions. In most of the cases, I have given the published time and the rectified time so that the readers may work on them and master the principles of rectification.

2. Hindu Progressions (Dasa System): In every case, I have worked out the Hindu Progressions to show how easy the system is and how the major events of the whole life can be worked out in advance by an astrologer, even at the time of birth. No advance Ephemeris is needed. 3. Span of Life: One thing is very interesting with the Western World. During my five years traveling and lecturing on Hindu Astrology all over the world, I have not met a single person who was interested in the span of Life. It is good, but it can cause many problems for an astrologer. In this book, I have explained how to judge the Span of Life. For example, take the cases No. 23/24 in this book. Richard's case is a mystery for the Western school till today but not for the Hindu school. When the chart is prepared at the time of the birth of a child in India, the first thing an Indian astrologer will do is: look to the longevity.

4. Transits: were not very common with the Hindu School of Astrology. Reasons were simple. Ancient sages of Hindu Astrology were working from the physical observations of the heavens and no ephemeries were prepared. But this is not the problem today. For every illustration, I have worked out the transits. Transits help to bring the orb closer in timing the events. It is true that every transit may not bring the event but no event can take place without the transits.

5. The Lunar Mansions: once born an important part in observational astronomy, especially in India. The Western school of astrology is more or less ignorant about it but it will be interesting to note that the Lunar Zodiac was discovered about 2500 B.C., much earlier than the Solar Zodiac. These were very ancient in India and every lunar station was associated with some occurrence of life. I have constantly used Lunar Mansions in this book to show how the planets get modified by being in different Lunar Mansions. I do not claim that this book is complete on Lunar Mansions, but it will help the readers to know how much more important the Lunar mansions are in predictive astrology. For example, a planet in Aries (Sidereal) upto 13-20', it will be in Krittika. Planet in Aswini will be different that the planet in Bharani in predictive astrology, though it is still in the same solar Sign.

Amongst the salient features of Hindu Astrology are certain combination of the planets which give rise to certain Yogas. Natures and characteristics of the planets are not considered. For example, rulers of the angles and trines together give rise to a Raja-yoga (king-ship). For Scorpio ascendant, Moon is the ruler of the 9th house (trine) and Saturn is the ruler of the 4th house (angle) and if they are together, they will rise to a Raja Yoga, irrespective of other planetary positions. In Western school, it will be considered to be a very malefic combination.

Though Karmic Control Planets (dispositors of Rahu/Ketu) are casually mentioned in my book: Rahu & Ketu in Predictive Astrology, I found out later that Karmic Control Planets play a much more important role in shaping the destiny of a person than what I had visualized earlier. When Rahu/Ketu are so important in Hindu Predictive Astrology, why not their dispositors? If a planet can get modified simply by its rulership of a certain house, why can a planet not get modified due to its rulership of a sign or a house occupied by Rahu/Ketu. I started working along those lines and I was right. This book is the outcome of my researches on those lines in the last few years. I have named the dispositors of Rahu/Ketu as karmic Control Planets.

Marshal Tito became the President of Yugoslavia because his Mars, giving rise to Ruchaka Mahapurusha Yoga was a Karmic Control Planet. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the President of India because his Mercury was the Karmic Control Planet being one of his Raja Yoga.

All these principles of Hindu Predictive Astrology have been fully illustrated in this book by giving 36 practical illustrations. More and More illustrations will be presented of published notable nativities in the future volumes of this book.

The principles set forth in its pages should be scrutinized and tested thoroughly for I do not wish anybody to accept them blindly. The book in your hands is the result of my researches and experiments and I have taken considerable pains.

My thanks to Lynne Murphy, student from Australia, who is here to study Hindu Astrology and is staying with my family. She helped me to edit the book finally and typed out the manuscript for the Press. Without her help, this book would have been ready before I was scheduled to leave for Europe, USA and Canada on my lecture tours on 27th June 1980.

If this book meets the approval of the learned readers, the credit goes to Lenora M. Hill. Without her critical mind and precise approach, perhaps this book would never have been written. If not, I take the blame. Lenora is my sincere friend and a well-wisher. Though she is not here physically, she was always with me spiritually. She was in constant communication with me on higher levels.
