Book Description
Preface

People seem to be gradually losing faith in conventional therapeutic systems. Today, more and more people have come to entertain serious misgivings about all kinds of medication, and are now beginning to look upon Naturopathy as the ideal alternative to taking potions and nostrums.

A comprehensive survey carried out in the United Kingdom in 1970 showed that 90 per cent of the people had implicit faith in their family doctors, but within the span of only ten years, the situation changed drastically. A survey in 1980 revealed that the percentage of the population reposing complete faith in the family doctor fell short of even 40 per cent. This rapid erosion of faith is not only significant, but it also augurs well for the future of Naturopathy.

Some twenty years ago, it appeared that the battle against diseases was going to be won decisively with the help of the wonder drugs that were being discovered at the time. New and improved equipment and methods of diagnosis were being developed, and epidemics of infectious diseases were being brought under control one after another. The picture is not so rosy today. We are gradually becoming aware of the numerous side effects would have been over looked. But the reality is different. Despite the fact, that the expenditure incurred by the United States government on the protection and preservation of the health of its citizens is many times greater than that incurred by any other country, sad to say, more and more people there are falling victims to a wide variety of diseases, and a larger proportion of young lives are being lost than ever before.

It can, no longer, be denied that it is impossible to wipe out diseases merely by medication. What is necessary is that people should be inspired and encouraged to take an active interest in their own health, and to instruct them in the basic rules of the preservation of health. This is the principal aim of Naturopathy. Nature cure does not employ the trial and error methods so prevalent today which are strikingly epitomized in the dictum: “If one medicine does not work, try another. If that one also fails, there is always a third one…

Naturopathy has a completely different approach to the treatment of diseases. Naturopathy defines disease as “disease”, an absence of the feeling of well-being generated by robust health. Nature cure does not attempt to get rid of illness, but aims primarily at restoring health. It does not attempt a frontal attack on the diseases or microbes, but endeavours to strengthen the natural defences of the body. In short, it is the body that effects the cure, not the physician.

It is doubtless true that people are turning, in ever increasing numbers, to nature cure, but many of them regard Nature cure methods, fundamentally, in the same way as they regard other therapeutic systems, and try to evaluate the curative methods of Naturopathy by the standards of other systems. A single illustration will serve to explain this point. A person suffering from a chronic disease goes to a Naturopath, and is told that it would be necessary to fast for two to four days, and that for the next few days only simple uncooked food would have to be taken. At once the person exclaims, ‘Why? My family doctor has always been telling me that one must take highly nutritious protein-rich food four times a day; otherwise one gets weakened, and the body gets emaciated, losing weight.” It is difficult to convince such a patient that the task of freeing the body from the disease, and that of maintaining its strength and weight, are different, and so the two cannot be accomplished simultaneously. If the patient keeps the medical counsel of the previous physician in mind and fasts, or restricts his diet, unwillingly, this negative attitude is bound to have an adverse effect on the body, resulting in weakness and slowing down of the rate of recovery. It is absolutely imperative that the patient adopts a method of treatment in full faith, and follows the prescribed regimen scrupulously.

Nature cure methods have not yet become very popular in our country. People are still dazzled by the so-called wonder drugs and the huge sophisticated contraptions used for diagnosis. But as real understanding and education gain ascendance, the futility and dangers of drugs will become glaringly evident and the number of adherents of Naturopathy will surely increase manifold. The future on Naturopathy is, therefore, bright.

There is no room for doubt that if the reader studies, understands and practices the methods described in this book, he will be able to free himself from the threat of disease, and enjoy perfect health. Equipped with a mastery of Nature Cure methods, he will be able to treat and eliminate not only his own ailments, but also those of his near and dear ones.

In conclusion, we would gladly welcome from all our readers, any suggestions and opinions they would like to give about this book.
