Instroduction

It’s interesting to write about Kerala: if you don’t get laughs, you get chuckles. If you don’t get smiles, you get ulcers –yes. You always end up with something! To Jeer at ourselves, we know how, and but not for our jest. We’d’ ve gone under the sea. A long time ago! It’s surprising how we’ve survived. Despite bad mansoons, and worse politics!

Why So Grim?

If all our people can take pills which would make our society perfect how boring would life be! it’s a fact that we are misfits when we have to adjust ourselves to the changing life styles. We would rather wish to turn the whole of society into misfits. It’s then the brother’s keeper becomes his jail keeper.

I have no moral right to criticize my society because it requires a great degree of conceit to do so. But it’s common knowledge that everman is pulled and shoved by his appetites, hissed to by fears, and yapped at by his motives. And a cartoonist finds his brand of intolerance as a type of escape from himself. He doesn’t like cowardice to be made respectable as to have many followers. Therefore some artificiality, some posing and pretense is inseparable from his critical pursuits.

We are afraid as the world pokes it’s fingers into our souls-afraid we are all sham and show, afraid we are not ourselves as the colour of our skin. We have become too sensitive and this seems to have given up our sense of humour. There is nothing so invisible than an unpleasant truth though it’s held before our very eyes. Exaggeration is not an alibi for the disinclination to think or praise. It’s the right of a critic to criticize even when his opinion is not in everybody’s favour. Often he behave like a society lady who give a damn what people think of her. He doesn’t hide that which is to be hidden from sight. He reveals it all with malice to none.

An easy going person is more attached to eternity than one who takes his prospects seriously. A serious person lies and makes his lie come true. So, please don’t be grim and pardon me if I have taken liberties!

Bit More on Introduction

Kearla is paradise! Here is a stretch of land half submerged in water which knows no bias, no bigotry, no sanitation no fools- some 2000 miles south-west of Himalayas. It’s growth is phenomenal: it’s government is in Thiruvananthapuram, bankers in Thrissur, it’s people being chin-up are everywhere on the globe, and it’s economy is going to hell! Every woman writes a latter to her husband working in Dubai: Dear hubby, -how come no letters from you in days. Send me soon a remittance so I will know you are in good health!”
