Preface

The basic premise of Ayurveda is that the entire cosmos or universe is a part of one singular absolute. The amazing journey of Ayurveda from its divine origin to the present day has left us wondering about the enormous potential this science possesses. Its successful existence since time immemorial itself proves its scientific approach attributed to its unique principles that have remained unchanged till date. The validity of Basic Principles of Ayurveda has kept this immortal science existing till date.

As human beings progressed and became aware of their surroundings, they began to enquire into natural phenomenon using reason, which lead to the establishment of scientific methods and theories for investigating and understanding the world. As the process of enquiring and obtaining knowledge moves ahead, different theories and ideologies were established, and they have been termed as different philosophies.

The most primitive source of the knowledge is believed as Veda. Later on it was divided into different Darshana. Most of the concepts of Darshana are found similar at par to Ayurveda but still every science differs from each other and so as Ayurveda. Darshana used their concepts with their own vision and views mainly for the knowledge of universe and Mokshaprapti whereas Ayurveda used and established this knowledge as an applied science keeping the aspect of life and its status like health and illness along with Hetu, Linga and Aushadha i.e. Upaya. No doubt about this truth that later on Ayurveda also expanded its area up to the Naishthiki Chikitsa i.e. to obtain the Moksha.

Vaiseshika Darshana used the term Padartha for the whole universe and divided it into six categories which are Dravya (substance), Guna (property), Karma (action), Samanya (similarity / generality), Visesha (dissimilarity / specificity) and Samavaya (inherence) to which a seventh Abhava (non existence) was also added later.

Now, what is Padartha?

Literally it means "meaning of the word". Padartha is an object which exists, which can be recognized, named and experienced and which becomes the subject of knowledge on the basis of its utility & not merely the things of the physical world.

In Ayurvedic science Siddhanta are the tools for achieving good success in Chikitsasara. Among all the Siddhanta, Karya-Karana Siddhanta is most important and it is the mother of all Siddhania. The two terms Karya and Karana are well established in Ayurveda and also their meaning has been described on the basis of their application. Hence, in Ayurveda, Shadkarana are considered as Karana and Dhatusamya is accepted as Karya of Ayurveda. Same has been quoted by Acharya Charak as.....

Now from the above discussion one can say that the terms Padartha and Karana are one and the same but only difference is that Padartha is the unique terminology of Darshana whereas Karana is the unique terminology of Ayurveda. Each and every Dravya present in this universe has some specific properties with it by which its function and characteristics are determined. Knowing these properties provides essential tools in the hand of physician because while prescribing the medicine to the patient he always keeps in the mind that which properties remain permanently in the particular drug which is being used. In the diagnostic criteria also one cannot see directly by senses that from which disease the patient is suffering. One has to depend upon the signs and symptoms i.e. the Pratyatma Lakshana which are inseparably concerned with the particular disease.

To understand any science or Ayurvedic science, it is very essential to understand its fundamental principles. These are the back bone of all the sciences. Any knowledge, if it remains into theory only, it becomes the literature, but when it founds its path of application gets flourished as the science. The basic principles of Ayurveda though profoundly genuine and of much applicability, but their analysis and implementation is needed to be timely tested such as other sciences. Therefore, here an attempt is made to understand all basic Principles concerned with Philosophy as well as Applied Ayurvedic aspect.
