About the Book

The intensity and force of Premchand's creative genius was felt not only by a handful of scholarly critics but also by a large number of common readers. In fact he attained a fairly wide popularity in his own life time. Through a series of great and powerful works, Premchand transformed the whole art of fiction writing and laid the foundations of a vigorous tradition of realistic and socially relevant fiction.

The present book seeks to present before the readers the creative genius of Premchand in its manifold manifestations, and to impress upon them the special relevance of his work in this socio-economic and cultural-political context of our own times. As would be evident from the articles com-piled, the learned contributors have taken pains to probe deep into the writings of Premchand-both creative and other, in order to establish the basic point that he achieved his greatness chiefly through his ability to grapple with the contemporary social reality with deep compassion and firm humanistic commitment.

We hope that although Premchand is physically no more with us, this anthology will serve to deepen and strengthen the feelings already existing among readers that as a creative writer, he is still our contemporary and we can converse with him through the medium of the great master-pieces he has left behind with us.
