Book Description
Preface

Wink teaching an introductory course in architecture to civil engineering students at Anna University. I felt the need for a basic introductory single text. Students and teachers need to refer to many textbooks to find material pertaining to the different units given in the curriculum. T. book aims to overcome this difficulty and render the course contents and difficult terminology simpler for the students, thus making the teaching-learning process simple and efficient.

Contents and Structure The book is aimed at civil engineering students who wish to master the basic architectural concepts as quickly as possible. It must be noted that the illustrations are not supplements to the text but in a very real sense the text itself. This illustrative approach will facilitate the understanding of important design concepts for those students who do not have enough time to digest lengthy descriptions. Chapter 1-Fundamentals of Architecture-covers the basic definitions, elements, and principles of design.

Chapter 2-Aesthetic Components of Design-discusses the aesthetic qualities of buildings such as unity, proportion, scale, balance, symmetry, and rhythm with the aid of historic examples.

Chapter 5-Aesthetic Relationships, Character, and Style in Buildings-explains the meaning of character and style in traditional and modem architecture as well as the effect of the aesthetic impact of harmony, contrast, dominance, punctuation, and climax on the overall composition of a building.

Chapter 4-Factors Influencing Architectural Design--addresses the factors to be considered in architectural design.

Chapter 5-Contemporary Architecture-presents the biographies, themes, philosophies, anti works of six famous architects.

Foreword

In the field of architectural practice, group culture is necessary to establish aesthetically appealing and structurally sound buildings. An architect is a co-coordinator in the planning and execution of any project. He should be conversant with other related disciplines such as structural design, air conditioning, treating and ventilation, mechanical and electrical engineering, acoustics, lift technology, boiler technology, and landscaping to be able to interact with experts in these disciplines. In the same way, the engineers connected with the construction must .m, understand, and appreciate the basics of architecture to interact with and appreciate the perspective of architects and other experts.

In this direction, this book is a long felt need and I am happy to be a part of this book through this Foreword. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first attempt at simplifying architecture for students and experts of other disciplines, especially students of engineering and technology in India This book teaches them the basics and takes them to greater heights of understanding. The students of engineering are often found to be non-appreciative of the usefulness of aesthetic aspects and creativity; this book attempts to bridge that gap. Its simple language and explanations through illustrative sketches will facilitate the comprehension of these concepts.

About the Book

I am confident that most students will be able to appreciate the necessity of aesthetics in-architecture after going through this book, the entire credit for which would be due to the author. I congratulate the author for coming up with this book and extend my best wishes to her.

The book aims at sensitizing students of civil engineering and architecture to the relationship between architecture and engineering. Designed to meet the requirements of an introductory course in architecture, the book provides the basic knowledge of architecture as a design process, which results in functionally efficient, economically viable, and aesthetically appealing buildings.

Starting with simple definitions, descriptions of basic elements, and principles of design, the book covers the core topics in architecture such as aesthetic qualities in buildings, aesthetic relationships, and aesthetic impact in detail. It also discusses safety regulations, layout regulations, and building rules. Enriched with numerous architectural examples from history, the book also presents the works and ideas of some famous architects from India and abroad.
