From the south in Kanyakumari to Kohima in the country's North-East or Kashmir in up North, cricket has spread its influence - a game bringing joy, celebration, and (once in a while) despair.
Picking the bat and ball from the erstwhile colonial masters, the Indians - with their nimble footwork, the wizardry of the wrists, and the mastery over the twerking ball - soon made the game their own, playing the first official Test match against England in 1932. The country's first win also came against the same opponent in 1952, just years after Independence. Overseas success followed in New Zealand in 1967 and then again in the West Indies and England in 1971.
