About the Author
Dr. G. Prabhakara Rao born on 1st july 1964 to the parents Vaidya Sri Gonugunta Ramanaiah & Sitharamulamma at Botlagudur Village Pamur Mandal, prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh, India. He did his BAMS from Dr. N.R.S. Govt. Ayurvedic College, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh and Both M.D. (Ayu) Ph. D. (Ayu) with specialization in Rasa Shastra from IMS, BHU.
He is presently working as Chief Medical Officer (NFSG)at Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) (Under Ministry of Labor and Employment GOI), New Delhi. He was the best scholar throughout his academics. His direct and indirect mentor ship helped many students whose-ever preparing for ayurvedic post graduate/competitive examinations through his books.
He received many awards namely few, Dhanwantari award, Pt. Ramnarayana Sharma memorial award, pranacharya award, Gold medal, Acharya Nagarjuna Silver Medal and FISM (Fellow of Indian System of Medicine) etc.
He authored 18 books and many scientific articles on Ayurveda in various national and international journals and delivered many lectures at various platforms. He has many contributions to the field of Ayurveda through his writings. Delivered talks on Ayurveda in All India radio, Television channels and articles on Ayurveda are published in News papers.
He is the contributing expert for many of the workshops organized by Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, New Delhi. His clinical expertise helped many ailing patients. In to, his multidimensional outlook helped different stakeholders of Ayurveda through his lectures writings, expertise suggestions, visionary goals etc.
The Ayurvedic drug formulary of one thousand formulations i.e. "SAHASRA YOGAM" is one of the best compendia of Kerala tradition of Ayurvedic Practice. The formulary included in this text consist of various Ayurvedic pharmaceutical preparations viz. kasaya, gutika, avaleha, curna, ghrita, taila and asavaristas.
The present text is prepared on the basis of Sahasrayogam texts available in the market viz. telugu version written by Sri Vempati Koteshwara Shastry and hindi version written by Prof. R.N. Sharma and also other hindi version published by CCRAS Govt. of India, New Delhi. The telugu version and hindi version of Sahasrayogam contain only seven hundred five formulations, whereas in Hindi version published by CCRAS contains one thousand two hundred fifty nine formulations. The nomenclature of the chapters is also different from CCRAS publication to other versions.
Sahasrayogam hindi version published by the CCRAS contains seven chapters viz. prathama prakarana kasaya yoga, dvitiya prakarana gutika yoga, trittya prakarana curna yoga, caturtha prakarana leha yoga, pancama prakarana taila yoga, sastama prakarana ghritaya and saptama prakarana Asavanstant. Sasrayogam published in telugu and other hindi version contains eleven chapters viz. 1. kasaya prakarana, 2. ghrita prakarana, 3. Taila prakarana, 4. cuma prakarana, 5. arista prakarana, 6. Asava prakarana, 7. lehya prakarana, 8. vati prakarana, 9. gutika prakarana, 10. parisista prakarana and 11. pariststa prakarana taila ghrita.
In the present work an attempt has been made by the author to present the content of Sahasrayogam in twenty three chapters (which includes all the formulations available in the different editions of the text) viz. 1. Svarasa yoga prakaranam, 2. Kalka yoga prakaranam, 3. Kasaya yoga prakaranam, 4. Yavagvadi yoga prakaranam, 5. Ksirapaka yoga prakaranam, 6. Pantya yoga prakaranarn, 7. Phanta yoga prakaranam, B. Hima yoga prakaranam, 9. Panaka yoga prakaranam, la. Curna yoga prakaranam, 11. Lavana ksara yoga prakaranam, 12. Lepa yoga prakaranam, 13. Avaleha yoga prakaranam, 14. Rasayana yoga prakaranam, 15. Guda yoga prakaranam, 16. Guggulu yoga prakaranam, 17. Gutika yoga prakaranam, 18. Taila yoga prakaranam, 19. Ghrita yoga prakaranam, 20. Asava yoga prakaranam, 21. Arista yoga prakaranam, 22. Rasayoga prakaranarn and 23. Lauha mandura yoga prakaranam with a view to highlight the technique involved in each and every pharmaceutical process and its method of preparation based on the background of Rasa shastra and Bhaisajya kalpana.
Systematic, schematic and methodical presentation of each and every formulation, maximum cross references, clarity of the text with multiple side headings, modern measurements (metric system), Prabhakara commentary with personal experiences are the highlights of this book. A good number of appendixes added to this text for better understanding of the subject matter in depth.
