Campukavya is one of the appealing varieties among the sravyakavya of Sanskrit literature. The system of Campukavya is seen in the Vedik literature, Puranas and even in Inscriptions. The rhetoricians of Sanskrit from Bhamaha of 5th century A. D. to Vidyanatha of 14th century A.D. almost all have defined Campukavya गद्यपद्योभयमर्य चम्पूरित्यभिधीयते in their works on poetics. Bhojaraja, Sharabhojikavi and some other poets of Campukavyas have defined beautifully its merit in the beginning of their works.
The first Campukavya is said to have been the Nalacampu of Trivikrama Bhatta of 9th century A.D. It is composed in seven Ucchvasas i.e. Chapters. According to the History of Sanskrit literature 300 Campukavyas have been edited and published till now and hundreds of unpublished Campu works are there in the Manuscript libraries in India and abroad. According to the History of classical Sanskrit literature, the contribution of poets from south India is higher than the composition of Campukavyas of other parts of India in Sanskrit.
We, from Sanskrit Academy, have published nine Campukavyas that were composed by poets of Telangana and Andhrapradesh and now bringing out one more beautiful Campukavya Rajaratnamalacampu authored by veteran scholar and poet Dvibhashi Somanatha Shastry.
