Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy has one of its objectives as : 'To initiate, develop, co-ordinate scientific research in different aspects, fundamental and applied, of Homoeopathy'.
In pursuance of this objective, scientists of the Council work in co-ordination with each other to obtain reliable data on various drugs. This monograph on Terminalia chebula is the result of one such endeavour.
Terminalia chebula is one of the oldest known drugs in India, mention of which is found in the literature of Sushruta and Charaka. So much is the importance of this drug that it is used in many religious ceremonies observed by the Hindus in India.
Although the proving of this drug was done in Calcutta previously, our Council undertook the detailed study of the drug in 1985-86 and reproved it in 1991-92. The drug samples were obtained from the Survey, Collection and Cultivation Unit of the Council and were standardized. The data obtained during Drug Proving was Clinically Verified over a period of twenty years.
This monograph is a guide, an assimilation of symptoms, to be revised and added to establish Terminalia chebula as a polychrest, a position it so well deserves. I, therefore, look forward to the comments and suggestions of my Homoeopathic colleagues.
