Sangeet Sartaj
A child prodigy, Shrinivas and his mandolin were firmly established on the carnatic music scene even before he was ten. He started learning from his father, Sri U Satyanarayana and later on trained under the able guidance of Shri Subbaraju. His creative energy took this little known instrument to hitherto unknown heights. Critics could not stop raving about this nine-rear-old prodigy whose skill at his art created ripples among the established instrumentalists.

He played in his first major metropolitan concert during the music festival in Dec’ 81. Sabhas vied with each other to present him to the musically savvy Chennai audiences. He was a runaway success and was very soon offered a worldwide concert tour.

German TV telecast a live performance by him at the West Berlin Jazz festival. He got a chance to exhibit his genius among musicians in countries like Australia, Canada, U.S.A and Asia. He has been honoured with titles and citations by all the leading organizations. The music academy, Chennai presented to him the coveted TTK Award.

Volume I
Sanger Sartaj presents a unique compilation of Mandolin U. Shrinias

In this volume Shrinivas elaborates the raga Hemavathi and plays the composition of Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Srikanthimati. Brisk gamakas, crisp elaboration of the raga and his mellifluous swara patterns are the hallmark of his inimitable style. The essence of the raga, together with intricate passages that enhance the beauty of each swara, combine with each gamaka to create divine melody. Shrinivas in this album also plays the soft scales of the Valaji ragam where he reveals an introspective and soothing side to his music. He thereafter plays the famous composition of Mutthyya Bhagavatar’s Jalandhara.

Volume II
Sanger Sartaj presents a unique compilation of Mandolin U. Shrinias

In this volume Shrinivas plays the rare Kokilavarali composition of Saint Thyagaraja where Thyagagaja asks Lord Rama if it were possible for anybody to remain in his august presence. Even Gods like Brahma and Indra could not have His darshan in vaikunta. Only after their fervent prayers could they succeed in fulfilling their dreams.

Not often does an artiste make an attempt to play a Janya raga like Bindumalini as the main piece of their concert. Here U.Shrnivas justifies his elaboration of the beautiful and rare raga Bindumalini and plays the only krithi in this particular raga. Thyagaraja had composed-Entha Muddo Entha Sogaso where Thyagaraja described the beauty and the noble qualities of Lord Rama. A special mention has to be made to the Ragamalika swaram in this composition where one can discern his extraordinary competence while handling ragas like Sucharitra and Vasanthi.
