From the CD

The spiritual, ritualistic and devotional superstructure of India is a glittering multiplicity of faiths, icons, systems and ways of living. The Bhakti cult is one supersystem which germinated perhaps around the 5th century A.D. and made its most voluminous contributions between the 15th and 18th centuries A.D. The cult was concretized by the great Bhaktas- best know being names like Meerabai, kabirdas, Surdas and Tulsidas- all saint singers, who spoke and sang the language of common folk- extolling the virtues of good thoughts, good deeds and an existence of simplicity, honest work and devotion to one Supreme Lord. Thus the Bhakti cult was a movement against the tyranny of rituakism, casteism, untouchability and other aberrations which had crept into formal religious practices. The songs of these innumerable great savants- ranging from the alvars and Nayanars of the Braj region like sur and tulsi to the Vaishnavite mendicants of the East- have come to be generically called Bhajans in today’s musical milieu. They have grown to become a beautiful body of devotional literature in India, serving a purpose different from the esoteric Vedic chants, mantras, stotras and stutis, or the great philosophical scriptures and epics of this land.

This ‘Bhajan’ series of HMV brings the immortal words of the Bhakti movement of India through many memorable voice of contemporary music like D.V. Paluskar, kishore Amonkar, Bhimsen Joshi, M.S. Subbulakshmi, pandit Jasraj, Girija Devi, kumar Gandharva, Lata Mangesgkar, Sandhya Mukherjee and others.

When her mythological films like Meera, Savithri and Sakuntala, M.S.Subbulakshmi emerged in the forties as a symbol of the saint singer Meera- an image which she retains half a century later. This album presents a variety of Bhajans from the great musician- including the poignant Surdas pada- ‘Maiya mori, mai Nahin makhan khayo’- where the errant Krishna tries to convince his mother Yashoda that he did not steal the butter.

Tu Dayal Deen Haun (Tulsidas) Maiya Mori Main Nahin Makhan Khayo (Surdas)

Bhajo Re Bhaiya (Kabirdas). Pyare Darshan Di Jo (Meerabai)

Bujhat Shyam Kaun Too Gori (Surdas). He Govind He Gopal (Surdas)

Ghanashyam Aya Re (Dinesh Nandini). He Govind He Gopal Krishna He Murari (Indira Devi)

Yaad Avey Brindaban Ki Mangal Leela (Rehana Tyabji)

Testimonials
Thanks again Exotic India! Always perfect! Great books, India's wisdom golden peak of knowledge!!!
Fotis, Greece
I received the statue today, and it is beautiful! Worth the wait! Thank you so much, blessings, Kimberly.

I received the Green Tara Thangka described below right on schedule. Thank you a million times for that. My teacher loved it and was extremely moved by it. Although I have seen a lot of Green Tara thangkas, and have looked at other Green Tara Thangkas you offer and found them all to be wonderful, the one I purchased is by far the most beautiful I have ever seen -- or at least it is the one that most speaks to me.
John, USA
Your website store is a really great place to find the most wonderful books and artifacts from beautiful India. I have been traveling to India over the last 4 years and spend 3 months there each time staying with two Bengali families that I have adopted and they have taken me in with love and generosity. I love India. Thanks for doing the business that you do. I am an artist and, well, I got through I think the first 6 pages of the book store on your site and ordered almost 500 dollars in books... I'm in trouble so I don't go there too often.. haha.. Hari Om and Hare Krishna and Jai.. Thanks a lot for doing what you do.. Great !
Steven, USA
