Music for Relaxation Pandit Nikhil Banerjee

Music for Relaxation
Today’s hectic pace of life seldom allows one the luxury of stillness and serenity. We at Saregama have realized the need for a solution. What better than to provide solace to millions, using music as a medium!

In this album aptly named, ‘Music for Relaxation’, we bring to you the sonorous tone of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee’s sitar. This album soothes the senses and transcends the listener to a pristine and calm state of mind!

About the Artiste:

Pt. Nikhil Banerjee was born in Calcutta into a Brahmin family, where a musical profession was discouraged, although his father, Pt. Jitendranath Banerjee, who played the Sitar as a hobby, initiated Pt. Nikhil Banerjee into it. Young Nikhil grew into a child prodigy, won an All-Bengal Sitar Competition at the age of 9 and was maestro Ustad Amir Khan, who became a life-long influence on Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. His father Jitendranath approached Ustad Mushtaq Ali Khan to accept the young boy as a student. Pt. Nikhil Banerjee thus had his initial training under him. In 1947 Pt. Nikhil Banerjee met Ustad Allauddin Khan, who was to become his main guru along with his son Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Pt. Nikhil Banerjee then embarked on a concert career that was to take him across the seas. Perhaps reflecting his early upbringing, he always remained a humble musician, and was content with much less limelight than a player of his stature could have vied for. For him, music-making was a spiritual rather than a worldly path. Giving him his due, in 1968, he was decorated with the Padmashri and posthumously also received the Padma Bhushan.

About the Music

Relief: Music is an universally accepted means of unwinding. Here, the power of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee’s music is sheer magic! The Alap, Jod and Jhala in Raga Hemant depict the first step in the process of Relaxation. Only when one is relieved of one’s tensions, can one even consider relaxing.

Repose: The next stage of calm and composure are reflected seamlessly in Raga Lalit, thus facilitating the process even further, thereby drawing the listener into a tranquil state.

Relaxation: Raga Sindhu Bhairavi is a form of Raga Bhairavi, an evergreen melody. The inclusion of rhythm ensures the surrender of both, body and mind, transporting the listener to a meditative state.

This initiative by Saregama is a sincere effort to reach out to the many listeners caught up in the ‘mayajaal’ of life. The therapeutic powers of music in soothing frayed nerves is highlighted in this album. Presenting an album with only Alap, Jod and Jhala in two of the three tracks. The feeling and development of a Raga by this process, followed by a concluding raga with rhythm accompaniment, is a treat to the music connoisseurs!
