Born into a family of Sanskrit pandits and keertan singers in Osmanabad in 1924, Pt. CR. Vyas’ musical journey spans four gurus and three Gharanas - Pandit Govindrao Bhatambrekar of the Kirana Gharana, Pandit Rajarambua Paradkar and Pandit Mirashibua of the Gwalior Gharana and most notably Pandit Jagannathbua Purohit of the agra Gharana. His assimilation of the Khayal traditions of these three leading gharanas combined with his own musical talents has resulted in a distinctive individual vocal style that has truly enriched Indian classical music.
Pt. C.R. Vyas has also composed several ragas and bandishes under the penname “Gunijaan’. He is the winner of the Sangeet Natak Academy award in the 1987, the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. His sons Satish Vyas – a noted santoor player and Suhas Vyas – a vocalist are outstanding musicians in their own right and are proudly carrying forward the musical legacy handed over to them by their father.
