About the Artist

Dev Anand, the mere mention of his name conjures up images of youthfulness, romance, style, and extremely good looks in the minds of his millions of fans and admirers the world over. Having ruled the Film Industry for more than six decades, Dev Anand has given a new dimension to that magical state known as stardom.

With a determination to make it on the big screen, Dev alighted on the Bombay Central platform in July 1943, with just Rs. 30 in his wallet. During day, he took up a job at the Military Censor’s Office, censoring letters written by soldiers posted in the front areas to their families. In the evenings, the film aspirant haunted to the coffee houses of the fort area which were frequented by film aspirants to exchange ideas and seek tip-offs.

Dev made his debut in Prabhat’s “Hum Ek Hain” in 1946 for a monthly salary of Rs. 400/-, a big amount in those days and certainly much more than his Censor Office salary of Rs.85/-. Dev became friendly with Guru Dutt in Prabhat who was the choreographer and later an asst. Director. Dev promised him that if he became a producer first, he would give Guru Dutt a break as a director. He kept the promise with “Baazi” which became a trendsetter and a landmark hit in many respects.

He went on scaling new heights with films after film. He won his Filmfare trophy for his class act in Kala Pani (1958). Another landmark film, for which he again won the Filmfare award was Guide (1966), directed by his younger brother Vijay Anand. Dev played raju, a lovable guide who supports Rosy. A woman trapped in an unhappy marriage and helps her gain freedom. Combining style with substance, Dev gave an affecting performance as a man grappling with his emotions in his passage through love, shame and salvation.

The star charisma continued to mesmerize Indian audiences with blockbusters like “Johny Mera Naam”, “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”, “Tere Mere Sapne”, “Amir Garib”, “Des Pardes” and many more. He has always played lead roles and never done any cameos or guest appearances.

From the time he embarked on his career as a career as a Film Actor in the mid-forties till now, his movies have been a journey filled with enriching experiences for the ‘Evergreen Living Legend’ of Indian cinema. And he has always remained eternally youthful by his remarkable ability to live always in the present and the future, never in the past.
