In the “Mahalakshmi Stotram”, goddess Lakshmi is identified as “the womb of the Mahashakti”. Thus, from the ultimate source of life, Sri Lakshmi emerges Mahashakti and in different contexts, takes different forms. She becomes Saraswati when placed alongside Brahma, inspiring his creations, she is Lakshmi or Narayani as the wife of the preserver of the Universe, Vishnu-Narayana, and she is Parvati or Mahadevi as the counterpart of Shiva. However, as highlighted by this magnificent watercolor painting of Mahashakti, the goddess is an independent divine entity, above all the male gods, functioning in her own right as the supreme being.

This watercolor painting of Mahashakti depicts her as the sole ruler of the entire world, an idea that is subtly conveyed by the unitary divine presence in an otherwise empty space. Her royal seat appears to be a hexagonal gold platform, on which the Devi sits in the “Sukhasana”- a position of ease. Her ethereal form is supported by a huge blue-colored cushion, against which the magnificent Mahashakti glows heavenly.

The goddess wears a distinctive-looking spiked crown, embellished with fine jewels. The moon-white aura behind her frames her angelic countenance well, however, the twenty arms of the Mahashakti, each carrying a potent weapon appear to be a more fitting aureole. The scene within the painting is framed by a golden arch, beautified by floral patterns. The color chosen for the background is ochre (gerua)- related to life-affirming elements, a perfect selection for this awe-inspiring watercolor of Mahashakti.
