Gods Venerate Mahalakshmi

$255

Markandeya Purana, a text that contains the story of the great goddess’ origin and her slaying of the demon-king Mahishasur mentions that it is as Mahalakshmi or Great Lakshmi that the goddess massacres the demon. Lakshmi literally implies the completion of one’s lakshya or aim. Mahalakshmi thus is the great-goddess who ensures that all the aims of her devotees are achieved. She is the energy- Shakti of Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Her powers are necessary for the cycles of origin, preservation, and, destruction. Mahalakshmi in reality is just one of the many names used to address the Adi-Devi, Durga, Para-Shakti, the primordial goddess, who reigns over Hindu Tantra and Shaktism.

In this watercolour painting, Mahalakshmi sits on a lotus flower in veerasana. A group of seven gods, all clad in resplendent attire bow in front of the beautiful goddess. Devi’s hand gestures and the body language of the gods denote that a conversation is taking place. The Devatas are unable to take any more of the atrocities that Mahishasur is inflicting on them. They beg Mahalakshmi to save them from the demon and his army.

The object of their petitions, Mahalakshmi wears exquisite red and yellow clothes, with regal ornaments and a jewelled crown. Her form is made divinely magnificent by the halo that frames her face. She has four arms, devoid of any weaponry, suggesting that she is currently distant from the context of the battlefield. A conch shell is placed on her padmasana (lotus seat), an auspicious instrument blown to announce the commencement of the war. Devi’s mount, the tiger sits nearby.  The warrior goddess is always prepared to take on the forces of evil! Drawn against a lush green background, the painting is an impressive visual narration of the supremacy of the great goddess.
