A composite Tanjore painting is an unusual thing in the traditional art world. The one that you see on this page is a mosaic of miniature Ganesha paintings. It is made up of a total of eight panels, seven of which are congruent; the centremost panel joins with the one directly below it, making for a larger surface area and, as such, greater detail.
The two panels at the upper corners of the painting depict the Lord with each of His wives, Riddhi and Siddhi, seated on His lap. Between them is the simple, seated figure of the Lord raising a hand in blessing. On either extreme of the row in the centre is a dancing Ganesha with the head turned to one side and a standing figure with the hand raised in blessing.
The lower row depicts the panchamukha Ganesha on one extreme, and the warrior-form on the other. The two-panel iconography of the Lord is the most glamorous. He is seated on an ornate throne underneath a gorgeously gesso-worked temple entrance, with an abundance of offerings in the foreground.
