While he generally reclines on his serpent couch, Vishnu, as the preserver of the universe and cosmic order, must occasionally awaken and inspect his realm. This he does by traveling on his mount Garuda. Such images are known as ‘Garudasanamurti’. The Lord is seen here riding his mount, who has the body of a man but wings and beak of an eagle.

As the Supreme Lord travels though the clouds, two celestial maidens set out to greet him. Holding garlands they sing and dance gracefully, welcoming their Lord. Crowned and bejeweled Vishnu has four arms that carry the club, wheel, conch shell and lotus. Garuda too is wearing a crown and other jewels.

This painting was created in the sacred town of Puri, in the northeastern state of Orissa. It uses the typical strong lines and brilliant colors that are typical of Orissan folk painting. Other features of this art are the particular style of drawing faces in which the noses are extended, the chins jut out somewhat from the face, and the eyes are elongated.
