The 'Lion of Punjab' as Maharaja Ranjit Singh is popularly known, found a place of honour in history as a great king and warrior of India. He was not only a great conqueror but also a capable administrator.

Tales from Punjab in the form of stories and songs, sing poems of Ranjit Singh's gallantry and courage. A majority of them speak of his humanitarianism that enabled him to pardon his foes; and by his dignified behaviour and considerate treatment, he won their love and respect. Though Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a Sikh, his government was not a theocracy. It was secular in administration and action.

A regal portrait of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, this painting justifies his title in dress and demeanour. A royal robe is complemented by regal jewellery; a sarpech made of gems and pearls adorn his turban. An aristocratic moustache and a flowing beard bears a royal mark. That he had lost one eye to illness was of little consequence. Despite the regalia, the portrait is painted in subdued hues, yet in all splendour!.
