In this woodland setting, Shakuntala accompanied by her sakhis or confidantes Anusuya and Priyamvada lingers lazily as her per deer grazes in the background. Her figure, revealing in the brief apparel of the forest maid, is tender and taut. Even though her expressions are not visible, she seems fearful and uncertain. her body posture speaks of her being seductive yet modest. This young and beautiful maiden has felt the first stirring of passion not known before. Her wistful, far away look evokes great emotion. the charming and heart warming idylls evince wonderful gentleness and refinement.
The composition becomes sentimental although the painter strives to imbue the whole with lyricism. This can be noticed in the atmospheric treatment of the bamboo grove which is full of mild, diffused illumination and hazy, vibrant foliage. This painting in warm and gorgeous colors is luminous and suggestive having a beautiful subject which at once rouses our love and aspiration.
