There are many sides to the great Lord Shiva. Sometimes He is the lone ascetic, sometimes the divine patriarch of a beautiful family. Sometimes He is serene, the epitome of visual aesthetics (such as in the typical Nataraja image), while at times He is gory and all-annihilating and awry. The Shiva painting that you see on this page draws from these multiple images.

The head of the family rests against the back of the faithful Nandi. The animal turns its head as if to nuzzle the feet of Shiva, who looks lovingly at Him. Parvati, His wife, lies down in front of Her husband as Ganesha suckles on Her bosom. The languages of their bodies are calm and unhurried.

Not far in the background is the multi-headed figure of Bhairava. In the midst of profound austerities, He is clearly in jitters. Farther into the distance is a black-barked tree with the canopies drooping ominously upon dark, blue streams. Rock and earth and stream, a deep black colour that is seemingly all-encompassing.
