Always there when you wake up and always by your side as you doze off to sleep, a mother’s presence feels eternal, omnipresent, and forever active in our lives. She who is never seems to take a moment off, seeing her sleep is a rare and soothing moment for the child. This acrylic on canvas by Mahima Katiwal following the trend of realism, fills the canvas with a seemingly ordinary scene, which is anything but mundane.
A simple room with grey walls becomes the sanctuary for the mother, who seems to have taken a few moments to relax. A lovely contrast of blue sheets and pink covers wrap her in their embrace, as she closes her eyes for a siesta. A glass of water on the side of the bed is placed for her convenience. A bindi on her forehead and a Kalava (sacred red thread) on her wrist, articles worn in Hindu families, suggests that she is probably the artist’s mother, transformed into a heartwarming artwork by her.
