Tibetan Buddhist Guru Rin Poche (Padmasambhava)

Tibetan Buddhist Guru Rin Poche (Padmasambhava)

Tibetan Buddhist Guru Rin Poche (Padmasambhava)

Guru Rin Poche is an incarnation of Lord Buddha. He came after eight years of Lord Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana. He gave the ultimate state of the true nature and benefitted all the sentient beings. Guru Rin Poche’s other name is Guru Padmasambhava which means ‘lotus Born’. It is believed that he appeared as an eight-year-old boy and that too in an ‘awakened state’ on a blooming lotus in the kingdom of Oddiyana. He is also known as ‘Second Buddha’. He taught Vajrayana also referred to as ‘Tantra’.

In this Thangka Guru Rin Poche is seated in a royal posture on a lotus throne with his legs crossed. He is holding a ‘Vajra’ in his right hand that symbolizes thunderbolt and in his left hand that is resting in his lap he is holding a skull-cup containing vase filled with sweet nectar to provide longevity and wisdom to his devotees. He also supports an ornamental stick against his left shoulder called ‘Khatvanga’. The trident represents bliss and divinity. It bears three severed heads symbolizing three Kayas (the three bodies of Lord Buddha, the dharmakaya, sambhogakaya and nirmanakaya) and a sash of five pure lights is tied on the trident. He has a large set of eyes with a smiling face ever ready to bless his devotees with profound knowledge. He wears a lotus-shaped hat of red color and his royal robe in different colors looks majestic. He also wears a white ‘Vajra’ undergarment beneath the robe. His aureole is surrounded with beautiful red lotuses in various sizes. The offerings in the foreground are lying on the pistil of lotus.

Lord Padmasambhava sits in the center while his consorts sit on either side. On his right side sits Mandarava and on the left side sits Yeshe Tsogyal. The white clouds and snow-peaked mountains at the backdrop enhances the grace and the tone of rich multiple colors of Thangka.
