This lepidolite Krishna is a unique iconography. At first glance, it is a visual narrative of the Lord’s victory over the wicked Kaliya. However, a more discerning eye would notice the multitudinous hoods and the wise, assertive stance of each of those (as opposed to venomous and vindictive), and conclude that it is actually Sheshanaga.

Shesha is the name of the naga (snake) that forms the bed of Lord Vishnu in paraloka (otherworldly realm of existence). In this murti, He is seen at the feet of Krishna, the eighth of Vishnu’s dashavataras. In fact, the form of Sheshanaga with numerous hoods and the body gathered in coil upon coil, forms the pedestal upon which He stands.

Lepidolite is a class of mica. The block of mineral from which this Krishna is carved is characterised by dense natural colour (deep purple). A great deal of detail and expression has been introduced into the mineral medium, especially in the serpentine musculature of Sheshanaga.
