Goddess Kamakhya is one of the most powerful manifestations of feminine energy. Also known as the Bleeding Goddess, she is worshipped as a natural crevice in a rock that symbolizes the ‘Yoni’ in the famous Kamakhya temple in Assam. According to Hindu mythology, Devi Sati immolated herself in protest on the sacrificial fire when Daksha, father of Sati, insulted her husband Lord Shiva after a Yagna. Shiva, in agony, swung her on his shoulders in cosmic rage and Lord Vishnu finally had to decimate her body to stop Shiva from destructing the world. Devi Kamakhya is believed to have emerged out of the place where the yoni (vagina) of the goddess fell.
This unique Kamakhya Devi idol made of brass depicts her as a divine young goddess with twelve arms and six heads sitting on a lotus base. The lotus emerges from the navel of Lord Shiva who in turn lies on a lion, the vehicle of Maa Durga. She holds a sword, trident, discus, shield, bow, arrows, club, lotus, bell, goad, kapala and conch in each of her ten arms. One of her remaining hands holds a golden bowl while the other is held in the ‘Abhaya Mudra’ or the blessing pose. The entire structure is placed on an elliptical platform with a beautiful lotus carving.
The statue has been carved out with extreme precision as can be seen from the detailing on all the ornaments and clothing. Her opulent jewellery and other adornments in the statue are dazzling. The lion looks majestic and Devi Kamakhya’s face is mesmerising. She radiates the energy of a powerful goddess who is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent.
