SHIVA: THE ALMIGHTY

This is a beautiful brass sculpture of Lord Shiva , he is the greatest among all other Hindu gods. Shiva by his meditating nature enables worshippers to have a stable and relaxed mind free from tensions and obstructions. He is the Lord of destruction and creation as he ends or destroys the cycle of time which in turn begins a new creation. Shiva is worshipped mostly in Lingam figure, only his Nataraj form is worshipped in human figure. He is mostly in meditation pose enjoying his own delights.

In this statue, he is sitting in a lotus posture or padmasana (to sit cross legged), lost in meditation. He is resting on a tiger which is kept on an inverted lotus. Just as a tiger gains victory over its desires by killing its prey, similarly, Lord Shiva is sitting on tiger and wearing its skin as his apron to demonstrate the victory of his desires. A snake is a symbol of death, so Shiva uses this venomous snake as his neck ornament to convey that only he can swallow the poison to save the world from harshness. There is a soothing and relaxed smile on his face. Two round, dotted kundals and a necklace adorn his body with grace and charm. He has three eyes, that represent the three stages of the universe, namely, past, present and future. Third eye, which is an embodiment of knowledge, fearlessness and wisdom, is in the middle of the forehead.

There is a glorious sunburst at the back of his head emitting divinely rays. He has beautiful textured matted hair (jata), tied like a multilayered temple top from where the sacred river Ganga flows. This river is a purifying agent and Lord Shiva, who is its abode is the personification of purity. This idol has four hands, where right hand is in a posture of blessing the worshippers and left hand is holding a kamandalu, in which sacred water is kept, used for purification, while the other two hands are holding a trishul (trident) and a small drum (damru) respectively. Trishul is a weapon used to punish the evil doers on all spiritual, subtle and physical planes. The damru when shakes, makes the evil shake and the wise awake. It produces a sound that denotes Nada, the cosmic sound of Om that can be heard during meditation. He has a crescent moon on his hair in the right side representing continuous change of time due to waning and waxing of moon.
