Once while visiting her maternal home in the Himalayas, goddess Parvati was taking a stroll in the garden with her friends. When one of her companions cracked a joke, Parvati’s laughter as a result of it was so loud that a beautiful, young man was born out of it. Parvati filled with pride in her creation called him Mama (mine). After roaming for long in the forest, Mama found the company of a demon, under whose influence he became evil and ruled the demon world as a ruthless king.

Lord Ganesh on hearing his wrongdoings challenged him for a war. He took the powerful and spectacular form of Vighnaraja (one who is above all obstacles) and defeated Mamasur. Here we have Vighanraja Ganesh in brass seated on the coils of the Adi-shehsa. His head is flanked by the five hooded serpent and adorned with the royal crown. On his forehead is the Trishul or trident which symbolizes a balance of the three Gunas (satva, rajas, and tamas) in the consciousness of Ganesh. He has his characteristic attributes the pasha (rope) and the goad in two of his hands. His main left hand is supporting the gada (mace) and his right hand is raised in the Varada mudra (giving boons to his followers). Vighnaraja Ganesh destroys all troubles of life, while also highlighting the fact that there is no greatness in Moha (worldly attachment).
