Hindu Goddesses; The Divine 'Prakriti' and her Manifestations

The calm, serene Goddess of wisdom Devi Saraswati, the Goddess of wealth, beauty, luxury, and fortune Devi Lakshmi, and the powerful and mighty manifestation of ‘Prakriti’ Devi Durga; these holy trinity constitutes the major Goddesses of the Hindu Pantheon. At Exotic India, you can get magnificent idols and sculptures of each of these Goddesses all in one place, in varying sizes, postures, and forms.

The Devi is the all-encompassing ‘Prakriti’ or matter and it is believed that she manifests the above-mentioned transcendental qualities through various goddesses.

The Hindu goddess devoted to strength is Durga, who is known as the mother of goddesses, and Sakti, the energy or power of Shiva. She is also known as a warrior goddess who kills the buffalo demon, Mahisa. Mahisa had received a boon from Brahma that he could not be slain by any male.

Similarly, Goddess Lakshmi is devoted to wealth and fortune. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu. Seated atop a Lotus, draped in a red sari and decked in jewels, Goddess Lakshmi emanates peace and happiness and fulfils the wishes of her devotees.

Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and nature, represents the free flow of wisdom and consciousness. She is dressed in white, the symbol of purity and rides on a white swan. She is the embodiment of wisdom and consciousness and aids Brahma in the creation and maintenance of this world.

Besides these popular Goddesses, ‘Prakriti’ is also the personification of other subjects of worship such as earth (Prithvi), ethics (Aditi), and forests (Aranyani).

At Exotic India, you can browse through a wide range of divine Goddess sculptures sculpted by skilled artificers. These statues will adorn your home and office space with a heavenly aura.

Q1. How to use Goddess Annapoorani statue?

Mata Annapurna can be kept in two places, one being in the pooja /mandir or the Kitchen. In the case of the Kitchen, you can keep it in the Northeast corner of the Kitchen such that it is facing the West direction and the person offering prayers is facing the East direction.

Annapurna, Annapurneshwari, Annada, or Annapoorna (Sanskrit: अन्नपूर्णा ) means filled with or possessed of food is a manifestation of Parvati and is known as the Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment. Worship and offering of food are highly praised in Hinduism, and therefore, the Goddess Annapurna is regarded as a popular deity.

Food is considered sacred in Hinduism, and prayers are offered before consuming it. The person who identifies the importance of Annam (food) within the five layers of the body helps carry life in the worldly process and subsequently seeks to identify Brahman, the enlightenment. Annadana, the donation of food, is highly praised in Hinduism.

Worship Annapurna Devi God by reciting her thousand names and her one hundred and eight names. The Annapurna Vrat Katha containing stories of her devotees is also recited by her devotees.  Once the puja is over you can break your fast. One can chant The Sri Annapurna Ashtakam composed by Shankaracharya for nourishment, wisdom, and renunciation. Before partaking of any food, Hindus chant the following prayer:

"ओम अन्नपूर्णे सदापूर्णे शंकर प्राण वल्लभ ज्ञान वैराग्य सिद्ध्यार्थम भिक्षाम देही पार्वती। माता में पार्वती देवी पिता देवो महेश्वर बंधवा: शिव भक्तास्क स्वदेशो भुवनत्रयम्।

Q2. Who started idol worship in Hinduism?

Vedic people did not worship images or idols. They worshiped gods through prayers, chants, songs, rituals, and sacrificial ceremonies. According to historians, the practice of worshiping fertility gods and goddesses, animals, mythical creatures, plants, and kings was probably prevalent in the Indus Valley urban communities. However, there are some indications that a few communities in the South erected wooden temples (known as KOIL) in honor of their gods.

Recent archaeological evidence confirms that the knowledge and art of sculpture were established in India by the Maurya Empire period (3rd century BCE). By the early 1st millennium BCE, the term murti meant idols, images or statue in various Indian texts such as Bhavishya Purana verse 132.5. Only Shivlinga worship exists during Treta Yuga and Dwapara Yuga time.

Q3. Which God photo can be kept in the bedroom?

Vastu experts have recommended Radha Krishna idols and the photos could be kept in a bedroom. This will create an atmosphere of love between the married couple and make a peaceful aura for r residents of the house.

It is believed that the statue or the photograph of the Shani God should not be kept at home. As per Vastu, it is not advisable to place any photographs or statues of Gods, Goddesses, or Religious Gurus in the bedroom. If the puja room is installed by ancestors, then change it, if needed, in the northeast corner of the bedroom. The bed needs to be placed as far as possible from the Mandir. One can hang god photos on the North-East wall of the living room.
