There are countless gods in Indian mythology. Of them three are most power- ful. They are the heads or leaders of gods-Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. Brahma has the power of creation (srishti), Vishnu the power of preservation (sthiti) and Maheshwar that of destruction (vinash). The three gods are friends, but sometimes their activities are at cross-purposes. Brahma's boon made Ravan almost invincible, and to kill him Vishnu had to go down to the earth as Ram. Sometimes they even become rivals. Brahma and Vishnu once took up arms against each other, but finally both bowed down to Maheshwar. All the other gods accepted the trio as their superiors. Even Indra, the king of gods, ran to them in trouble. The demons too resorted to them for boons.
