The Lalit Kala Akademi has always sought to assimilate and display the staggering diversity in contemporary Indian art practice. The National Exhibition of the Lalit Kala Akademi being an annual event re-visits and re-interprets the contemporary visual culture, deepening further the inevitable bond between art and society as a whole. This Exhibition forms a vital strand of the Akademi's commitment to showcase the works of contemporary Indian artists from different genres and backgrounds working across a variety of mediums. In an attempt to encourage, support and build meaningful dialogues beyond the metropolitan cities, the National Exhibition unravels itself at a new venue every year. In the past, we have explored and exhibited at Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kochi, Bhopal, Chandigarh and keeping this continuity, this year the 54th National Exhibition of Art will be showcased at Agartala, for the very first time. Inspite of numerous difficulties this first initiative of showcasing the National Exhibition in Agartala is being undertaken by the Lalit Kala Akademi. New Delhi, in keeping with its status as India's National Academy of Art. The current exhibition is thus a positive and concrete step towards the fulfillment of the Akademi s objective of reaching out to the north eastern regions of the country in order to promote art and culture.
We received an enormous number of entries this year, which made the first round of selection task much more challenging for the Jury. They shortlisted 124 works for the National participation. All the selected artworks nurture and treasure our cognate culture in a variety of approaches. They concretise and weave together disparate themes in the fabric of our Indian identity. After a painstaking session of selection and elimination, the second round of the Jury has shortlisted 10 artists for the National Academy Award, 2012. I take this opportunity to thank the Jury members and congratulate the award winners as well as the participants.
An exhibition of this scale and ambition in the north eastern state of Tripura has been made possible with the generous support of Shri Manik Sarkar, Chief Minister, Tripura and Shri Anil Sarkar, Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Government of Tripura, Agartala, and we extend to them our heartfelt gratitude. My thanks are also due to Shri K R Subbanna, Acting Chairman, the Executive Board Members and my colleagues. at the Akademi for their continuous support and teamwork.
