The 57th National Exhibition held by the Lalit Kala Akademi has been an experience to cherish. Amidst the responsibilities and the enriching journey of looking at India's contemporary artists it has turned out to be an inspiring and insightful journey as we began with 7199 works submitted by 2797 artists, from all over the country:
The topmost priority was transparency and objectivity. This time we introduced an individual marking scheme of 1-10 which was given to all members of the Jury. The two tiered jury had a mammoth task. The first Jury had to look at 7199 works and shortlisted 122 works. They held discussions and deliberations over four days in order to do the short listing. The jury met between 9th-12th February 2016 at the LKA in Delhi. It consisted of eminent artists like Neeraj Goswami, Suman Gupta, Seema Kohli, and Gigi Scaria.
The second jury met in Lucknow, Eminent artists like Subodh Gupta, Niren Sen Gupta, Gogi Saroj Pal, Jai Zharotia, and Jagdish Dey met and finalised the selection of award winners, on 1st March 2016 in Lucknow.
I thank both the juries sincerely for their work and their objectivity in choosing the winners. This entire exercise of both the juries for selection and finalizing the National Awards has been one of great satisfaction and meritocracy.
