I started learning Tabla in my childhood in a small town called Udgir in Maharashtra. I come from a family of farmers. My father had keen interest in Indian classical music and wished at least one of his children learnt music in depth. There were limited opportunities for a student of Tabla to watch maestros in live concerts in our remote town and exposure to performances of maestros was mainly through audio cassettes.
Despite the fact that I never met Abbaji, I regarded him as my guru. Getting introduced to his musical style during my learning journey was a moment of epiphany.
