Born in 1757, Abhimanyu belonged to a zamindar family with its aristocratic traditions. In his early childhood he had his lessons both on the arts of versifi- cation and the Vaishnavite literature from the distin- guished scholar and poet Sadananda Kavisurya. A perfect combination of ornate poetry and Vaishnavic devotional fervour is to be found in Bidagdha Chintamani, the magnum opus of the poet. It has been hailed by the critics as a superb achievement as a work of art for its genuine poetic content and exquisite alliance of sound and sense.
In this monograph, Dr K. C. Mishra, Director of the Institute of Orissan Culture, has dwelt upon the creative process in the poems of Abhimanyu in the vast canvas of the social, political and cultural milieu of the then society.
