To be honest, I do not deem myself competent enough to write foreword of the present volume which embodies my late father's critique of the Aesthetic Theories of the West and the East and their bearing on Assamese literature. The content of the book and the field of enquiry traversed in the process of bringing out all the essentials of it is totally unfamiliar to me and practically beyond my comprehension and consequently it will be prudent on my part not to make any comments on it. I leave it to the knowledgeable readers and those who are conversant with the subject to judge the worth of this work and its place in the field of aesthetics.
The work was completed within a period of five years by my father following his retirement as the Principal of Nalbari College in 1968. That age and infirmity can be no deterrent to academic pursuits and creativity, had been demonstrated by my father through the writing of it. Subsequent to completing this volume, he also prepared the Assamese version of the same which was published by Dibrugarh University in 1980.
For a number of reasons, the work could not be published earlier. I am thankful to Shri Sadananda Gogoi, Secretary and particularly Shri Sushil Goswami, Asstt. Secretary, Publication Board Assam, Guwahati who took all the pains in bringing out the work despite various odds standing in the way.
I shall be failing in my duty if I do not acknowledge my debt to Dr. Parag Das Gupta, former Head of English Department, Pandu College, for his unstinted help in the matter of looking over the manuscript of the work.
