Vedas are eternal, which have neither beginning nor end. They have been preserved by our ancient Saints by oral tradition. These were outputs of intuition of seers in deep meditation stage. These are not composed by anybody. The language and meaning of Vedas are quite difficult to be understood by the common man. Vedas focus light on concept of Dharma, Adharma, God and creation of universe etc., which are unknowable by our sense-organs. Interpretation of Vedic literature is very difficult for scholars too. In this background, Bhagavan Vedavyasa, incarnation of Lord Vishnu has presented 18 Puranas to the chaste readers to secure pure knowledge and liberation. Out of 18 Puranas the Agni-purana is well-received by Indian and abroad scholars for its unique contribution to the field of Purana- literature. It is considered as encyclopedia which narrates concepts of Dharma, God and creation of Universe. The Agnipurana throws light on grammar, Chhandas (Meter- prosody), Alankara- shastra also. Here, we find new light on construction of temple (temple architecture) and residence architecture. Principles of Arthashastra (Economics), Tax and Income Tax policy, appointment of ministers and their qualification etc. We can study here jyotisha-shastra, planet-system, galaxy etc. The importance of presentation of knowledge, land, food, etc., to the learned and needy person is explained here. Everybody commits sins knowingly or unknowingly in his/her life. To wash out the sin committed from bad activities, the Prayaschittavidhi (Atonement of Sins) is explained in many chapters.

Here we are presenting research papers contributed from various scholars of the nation on Agni- purana.

I prostrate with sincere devotion to Sri Vishveshatirtha Swamiji who has been guiding the activities of the Samshodhana Mandiram for its all- round development.

I sincerely thank Prof. Radha Vallabha Tripathi, Vice-chancellor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan, New Delhi, who evinces keen interest in all the activities of Samshodhana Mandiram and guiding force whenever we approach him.
