Book Description

Foreword

A compilation of stories based sweet and sour human relationships, sentimental webs, spirit of sacrifice, callousness and pathos.

The stories of Rabindranath Tagore have a special niche in world literature as well besides having a special place in Bangla literature. There was no tradition till then of such stories in Bangla book world as Tagore wrote that were based on delicate human feelings. His stories created a new genre in vernacular section and enriched it.

Tagore, basically was a poet and won the Nobel Prize for poems. So, naturally his stories too contain a deep emotional content. The human relationships have been worded delicately in them. The poetic imagination of the writer lifts the stories to the heights of idealism and at the same time the earthly thoughts keep them tethered to ground realities. These stories woven with poetic craft, deft words and embroidery of emotional feelings turn them into a very fascinating tapestry that leaves deep impression on the reader’s mind.

It took a long period for Tagore’s creations to reach the non-Bangla readership in vernacular section. But Nobel Prize for Geetanjali spurred the activity of translation of Tagore’s works in other languages. Our translated ‘Geetanjali’ drew a good response. Encouraged by it we are bringing out this collection which, we hope will touch the- heart of the readers to make our sincere effort a worthwhile exercise. Your suggestions are welcome.
