A paper on the anthropometric measurements on Madhyandins—a Brahmin sub-caste of Maharastra was published in 1941. This was followed by an investigation of the Marathas—the agriculturists of western Maharastra. The University of Bombay gave a research grant of Rs. 800/- towards this study, the results of which were published in 1946. Lack of funds greatly delayed the work of an extensive survey of all important castes of this region but happily this difficulty was removed when the Trustees of the Emslie Horniman Fund gave a grant of Rs. 3,000/- towards this work in October 1945. The present study is a report of the work from that date up to the present. For the sake of a complete analysis of the major castes of this region the data of the two previous papers have also been included in this paper.
A work of this type is impossible without the ready co-operation and kindly help to hundreds of people. People of all castes and sub-castes were always kind and helpful and we record our thanks to them and to the many district officers, labour union leaders, managers of mills and leaders of town and village communities who gave us their hospitality and who worked as guides and liaison officers in this project.
We also record with gratitude the constant co-operation and kindness of the officers and staff of the Military Blood Transfusion Centre at Ghorpuri, Poona, who supplied us with test sera on each tour.
