The study of Nepalese art and monuments is still in its beginning. Recently a few painstaking works on Nepalese sculpture and iconography have appeared by such autho- rities like Dr. Stella Kram- risch, etc. The present mono- graph isin the same flux of research undertakings, and offers a minute and extensive study of one important aspect of Nepalese art, viz. the icons of Astral Divinities in Nepal, known from sculpture and literary texts. While tracing early traditions, the authors have usefully drawn compara- tive material from Indian sculpture and literature ; this justifyingly has to be done in a study like the present one that attempts at analysing the elements of Nepalese art and religion evolved through centuries with Hindu and Buddhistic traditions..
