When I was requested to write the Foreword for the forthcoming anthology of poems, Be Not Far From Me, by a mix of experienced and young writers, I grabbed the proposal with great gusto.
I never turn down an opportunity to connect with the young and their thoughts, for they provide a fresh perspective on issues and topics. As I see it, some of the contributors to the anthology are well-accomplished poets, with a few having won prestigious awards. There are also new kids on the block who are writing amazing poems.
The title of the book has a spiritual ring to it. It is of Biblical origin. Nonetheless, it can also have a mundane dimension. The lover wants the loved always to be in the vicinity; the devotee wants the deity to be always at the beck and call; it serves right in the case of a mother as well. It could also be a poet's prayer to the Goddess of Letters to grant him a steady flow of inspiration. Poetry is a rare gift.
