Snakes, tigers, epidemics... the common man in India lived under their constant threat. There were already great gods and goddesses who could protect him from them. Mahadev had drunk snake poison and used snakes as ornaments, Devi Durga rode lions and tigers and the Ashvini Kumars were doctors among the gods. Still, people felt insecure. They needed to conceive of other deities to take care of them in their everyday troubles. So emerged Manasa, Sheetala, Vaishno Devi, Banbibi and more such goddesses.
