The Bhagavadgita is, amongst texts on religion and philosophy, one of the most widely circulated books of the world; and-unlike some other texts that can be mentioned in this connection-its influence and popularity with earnest readers is steadily growing, particularly in India, the land of its birth. Under the circumstances, it has to be regarded as somewhat unfortunate that the work should not yet have been made available to the general reader in a form that is handy and easy of reference, and that gives a text entirely free from errors of omission and commission, including printer's mistakes. This opinion is expressed after an actual examination of a large number of available editions published in and outside India. The present edition is an effort to meet that deficiency; and the earnestness of the effort will become evident when it is announced that the Publishers of the edition are ready to present one copy of the book (or of its English Translation) free to any reader who will, for the first time, bring to the editor's notice a genuine mistake in the text of the Bhagavadgita as here printed. In subsequent editions the same will be duly rectified.
