The present Volume includes 61 research papers contributed by eminent Indologists, both from India and abroad. These papers representing all the major branches of Indology have been classified subject-wise and presented under eight sections, viz.. 1. Veda, II. Grammar and Linguistics, III. Classical Sanskrit Literature, IV. Sanskrit Poetics, V. Religion and Philosophy. VI. Socio-cultural History, VII. His- tory and Archaeology. and VIII. Technical Sciences and Fine Arts. Besides the said 61 papers, the Volume carries also a short profile of Dr. K. V. Sarma, in whose honour this Volume is issued, and a bibliography of his published writings. Prof. R. C. Paul, Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University has graced the Volume with a Foreword. It also contains an Editorial ex- plaining the circumstances of the publication of the Volume and also a Subject Index, which is a unique feature in Felicitation Volumes. In all, the Volume is in 544 pages, besides comprising some plates.
It is in the tradition of academic studies, in India and elsewhere, that the long and sustained work of scholars is given due recognition through Felicitation Volumes presented to them by fellow workers. Such Volumes are, in fact, welcome for more reasons than one. Apart from honouring the scholar, they enable one to take an over-all view of the varied contributions of the scholar. Moreover, an occasion is provided to his younger colleagues to pay their respect to him through academic contributions. For the masters in the field, an opportunity is offered to express their appreciation of the scholar through their contributions to the Volume. The ultimate beneficiary is the reader who gets through the Volume a sumptuous collection of edifying academic writings of everlasting value. From this point of view, I have great pleasure in welcoming the efforts of the Vishveshvaranand Institute (V.V.B.I.S.&I.S.) towards issuing the present Felicitation Volume in honour of Dr. K. V. Sarma, M. A., D. Litt., who served this institution in various capacities for nearly two decades and recently retired as its Director-Professor.
It is significant that the present Volume, which is being presented to Dr. Sarma, one of our senior scholars on Indology who has just attained the age of sixty-one, contains 61 research papers, all on Indological subjects, contributed by eminent scholars in the discipline. Dr. Sarma, whom I have had the privilege of knowing closely for the last few years in my capacity as Vice-Chancellor of the Panjab University of which the Vishveshvaranand Institute is a major Department, richly deserves this honour as much for his erudition, dedicated pursuit of knowledge and quantum of work accomplished as for his sterling character and affable manners.
